Resilience, Technically Speaking

I looked it up once — the definition of resilience. The ability of a substance to spring back into shape after being bent, compressed, or stretched. I thought about that for a long time. I do not think I sprang back. I think I was compressed for so long that I became something denser — something that does not bend quite as easily as it used to. I am not sure that is the same thing. I think it might be better.

I have always lived in doorways — one foot in, one foot out, belonging fully to neither side. It used to feel like a flaw. Now I think it might be the only honest way to exist in a world this complicated.
